GOVERNANCE
An outline of how we are
organised and governed
The Parochial Church Council (PCC)
The PCC is the primary committee involved in the running of our Church. It consists of the clergy team, churchwardens, readers and a number of elected members. It forms an official, elected body that shares responsibility for the Parish with the clergy team and provides an opportunity for parishioners to contribute to the running, the direction and mission of Hornsey Parish Church.
The PCC is not simply about money or building projects, but is about the church’s mission.
-
The PCC works with the minister in defining and promoting the mission of the church
Together with the Rector of our parish, the responsibilities of the PCC are to consult together on matters of general concern and importance to the parish, and to co-operate in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the church: pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. This includes almost everything to do with the church’s work in the parish, and its relationship with the deanery and the diocese.
-
PCC Members are Trustees of the church
The PCC is a body corporate, which means that it is a separate body from the people who serve on it. PCC members are also trustees, which entails various responsibilities under charity law.
-
The PCC is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the church, churchyard and moveable objects, the church hall and the curate's house
-
The PCC has overall responsibility of all expenditure and financial health of the church
Church Wardens
Our two Church Wardens are elected and are our most senior lay leaders. They are legally responsible with the Vicar for the fabric of the church buildings. In practice they serve as key advisors and leaders. They can serve for up to six years, elected each year at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in May.
The Diocese
We are a part of the London Diocese under the leadership of Bishop of London. The diocese is also subdivided into a number of episcopal areas each with its own bishop.
-
Our local bishop is the Bishop of Edmonton
-
We are also linked with other parishes in Haringey in what is called the Deanery
-
The clergy of the Deanery meet regularly at Chapter meetings and there is an elected lay body called the Deanery Synod which meets four times per year
-
Elections for this are held every third year and our elected representatives are ex officio members of the PCC too
There is also a Diocesan Synod and the General Synod for the whole Church of England. Both of these are elected by Deanery Synod members.
